This month’s vendor spotlight features Elena’s Cakes, a top wedding cake bakery in Dallas, Texas. Elena is our neighbor inside the Bell Jar and one amazing baker. I had a chance to sit down with Elena herself over a bottle of wine and a ton of laughs. All of her cakes are made from scratch with all fresh ingredients. If you haven’t—you need to taste her creations!
The Interview:
Q: When and how did you get started in the wedding industry?
A: Over 20 years ago and strictly by accident. I had a friend who used to own a bakery, and I thought these were the most the amazing things I’ve seen in my life. When I tried to create my first cake, it must have been a God-given talent, and I was hooked ever since. From that moment, my business grew by word of mouth.
Q: How far in advance should a couple request your cake services?
A: Usually 6-8 months in advance. But in the past few years, I’ve seen more brides booking 2-3 months in advance.
Q: Who is your ideal client and why do you think clients choose you over your competition?
A: First, I strongly believe there is enough business for everybody and if a potential client comes to me and I see they are not completely happy with my product, I’d rather refer a different bakery because to me the happiness of the client is the most important thing.
My ideal client—I don’t have any set client in my mind. Anyone that comes to a tasting and is happy and loves my cakes, I am honored to be a part of their big day!
Q: What do you adore most about weddings?
A: The best part of my job is meeting with happy people. Creating something beautiful. And of course, being a part of someone’s wedding day! I still get excited about every single wedding!
Q: How many weddings/clients do you take on a year?
A: I limit myself to up to 3 weddings a week.
Q: What is something you would like clients to know about you that they cannot read on your website?
A: I treat everyone that comes into my studio like they are my friends and family members!
Q: What advice could you offer to our newly engaged couples?
A: If you want a stress free wedding, hiring a wedding planner is the best decision you can make. It will make the wedding planning so much easier and make the wedding day completely stress free.
Q: What is your go to hangout spot in Dallas?
A: It’s not in Dallas, but it’s my family farm where we have miniature cattle.
Q: And my favorite question to ask: what is your signature cocktail?
A: I don’t have a signature cocktail. I love my WINE!
